GCSE SCIENCE (Double Award)

Year 10 Core Science AQA
Followed by
Year 11 Additional Science

Course Description
Double Science will be taught 10 hours per fortnight.

Year 10
Candidates will study 4 units:
Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Investigative Skills Assessment

There is significant emphasis on ‘How Science Works’ within these units. These will be assessed in June in conjunction with practical assessment in January and will lead to a GCSE in Science at the end of Year 10.

Year 11
Candidates will study 4 units: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Investigative Skills Assessment.
These will be assessed in June and in conjunction with practical assessment in January, leading to a second Science GCSE in Additional Science.

Scheme of Assessment:
Year 10 Core Science
1: Biology Exam in June 25% of the marks
Chemistry Exam in June 25% of the marks
Physics Exam in June 25% of the marks

2: Investigative Skills Assignment 25% of the marks
This is a practical skills assessment based on class practical work followed by an externally set,
internally assessed test taking 45 minutes.

Year 11 Additional Science
1: Biology Exam in June 25% of the marks
Chemistry Exam in June 25% of the marks
Physics Exam in June 25% of the marks

2: Investigative Skills Assignment 25% of the marks
This is a practical skills assessment based on class practical work followed by an externally set,
internally assessed test taking 45 minutes

GCSE SCIENCE (Triple Award)

AQA GCSE Physics
AQA GCSE Chemistry
AQA GCSE Biology

Course Description
Triple Science will be taught 15 hours per fortnight
Candidates will be studying for three GCSEs, one in each of the three science disciplines.

Year 10
Candidates will study 4 units:
Biology 1, Chemistry 1, Physics 1, Investigative Skills Assessment

There is significant emphasis on ‘How Science Works’ within these units. These will be assessed in June in conjunction with practical assessment.

Candidates will then study 3 modules starting in the summer term and carrying on into Year 11:
Biology 2, Chemistry 2, Physics 2, Investigative Skills Assessment

These will be assessed in January of year 11 in conjunction with practical assessment.

Year 11
Candidates will then study 3 modules starting in the spring term:
Biology 3, Chemistry 3, Physics3, Investigative Skills Assessment

These will be assessed in June and in conjunction with practical assessment.

Scheme of Assessment:
Each of the three sciences will consist of:

Year 10
A 1 hour written paper, taken in June 25% of the marks
Year 11
A 1 hour written paper, taken in January 25% of the marks
A 1 hour written paper, taken in June 25% of the marks
Investigative Skills Assignment 25% of the marks
