GCSE English (Single GCSE)
Brief Course Description
English is assessed via a series of controlled assessments (60%) and an examination (40%) in June of Year 11. Boys study a variety of literary, non-fiction and media texts.
The course is allocated 6 periods every two weeks in Year 10 and 5 in Year 11.
Minimum of three speaking and listening assessments
Plus
- Five responses to reading and writing from the following areas:
- Understanding Creative Texts
- Producing Creative Texts
Content of Examination
The range of reading assessed will consist of Non Fiction and Media Texts.
Writing will involve using language to inform, explain, describe, persuade, argue and advise.
Boys will also have the opportunity to engage with other Literary and Digital Media Texts.
GCSE English language & GCSE English Literature
(Double Award)
Brief Course description
English Language and English Literature are assessed via Controlled Assessments and examinations in January and June of Year 11. Boys study a variety of Literary, Non-Fiction and Media texts.
The course is taught in 6 Periods in Year 10 and 8 in Year 11.

One response to the following Literary Texts (25%):
The Significance of Shakespeare and the English Literary Heritage.
Examinations
ENGLISH LANGUAGE – (40%) 2 hour paper in January of Year 11. The reading will be drawn from a range of Media and Non Fiction Texts. Writing will involve using language to inform, explain, describe, persuade, argue and advise.
ENGLISH LITERATURE – 2 Exams: Poetry Across Time (35%) in January of Year 11 1hr 15min. Paper Exploring Modern Texts (40%) in June of Year 11 1hr 30min paper
