‘Improved progress’ of students enabled by ‘Determined actions’ of leaders secure a Good Ofsted rating for Sandbach School
Governors and staff at Sandbach School are delighted that Ofsted have agreed with the school’s self -assessment by awarding the grading of ‘Good’ in all areas. The observations made by Ofsted in their report validate the success of the recent initiatives put in place. Headteacher Mrs Burns said that, ‘This judgement gives the school and staff renewed confidence in our vision and plans for the school as we strive towards becoming an outstanding school in the near future.’
Ofsted acknowledged the improvement in GCSE results which saw 85% gain an A*-C grade in mathematics and 73% in English in 2014. Students’ work also demonstrated to inspectors that they are making good progress and that leaders are setting challenging targets for all groups of pupils. The report states that leaders’ and teachers’ assessments of students’ abilities are accurate because teaching, including marking and feedback, has improved.
Inspectors also noted that the school offers a calm and orderly environment with polite and courteous students, who enjoy school and who are attentive to their teachers, other adults and each other. They were united in their view that students are excellent ambassadors for the school. The clear vision and ethos on improvement was also recognised by Inspectors to permeate throughout the school.
Other highlights from the report include:-
The sixth form is good and continues to flourish, with sixth form students providing an outstanding contribution to the school. Extra curricular opportunities are outstanding and include sporting and musical opportunities along with visits overseas. Leaders’ and Governors’ evaluation of the school’s strengths and areas for improvement are accurate and Governors are holding the school to account well. Students were observed as behaving well and displaying positive attitudes to learning allowing students to become well rounded individuals. Arrangements for keeping students safe are good. Attendance rates are above average and rising. Student’s books and files show a good amount of work has been completed and that the use of marking which identifies strengths, weaknesses and next steps, has been a key contributory factor in the improvements made. Due to teachers having increasingly higher expectations for students with special educational needs, this group of students is making progress that is at least as good as other students in the school. Younger students are benefitting from the support given to them in reading and writing from older students. The gap between disadvantaged students and all other students is closing quickly. The curriculum is broad and balanced and teachers make opportunities to promote literacy skills across different subjects, which is improving standards of writing. Strong focus on teachers questioning is deepening students understanding and is paying dividends.
Chair of Governors, Chris Tyler said: “Governors are very pleased that Ofsted has judged Sandbach School as being a ‘Good’ school and that our ambition and drive to become outstanding has been recognized.” “We thank the staff for all their hard work and contribution towards maintaining high standards at Sandbach School under the leadership of our Headteacher, Mrs Burns.”
