Transition and Induction Phase (Year 7 & 8)

Program of study

Students receive 1 lesson of Computing per week. Students will study a range of topics from the National Curriculum Computing POS for KS3 learning through projects which all result in producing an item using appropriate software or computing tools.

Assessment & Homework

Students will be assessed through appropriate formative and summative assessments throughout each project receiving a final grade for each piece of work.

A variety of homework tasks will be set and published on ‘Show My Homework’. Typically a homework should take around 30 minutes. Examples include; research tasks, design tasks and learning key terminology.

Year 7

Half Term Curriculum content
Autumn 1 Students will be introduced to the School Network and the use of file management

Timetable – presenting information for a specific audience using a word processing package.

Creating my Superhero – creating a digital image for use in a game.

Autumn 2 E-Safety podcast – understanding how to stay safe online and using audio processing software.

Superhero game – programming using Scratch

Spring 1 Superhero game – programming using Scratch.

Mobiles – understanding how developments in technology affect society and presenting this knowledge.

Spring 2 Modelling – using spreadsheets to model a scenario.
Summer 1 Modelling – using spreadsheets to model a scenario.

Independent project – an opportunity to pursue an area of interest in Computing/ICT and develop independent learning skills.

Year 8

Half Term Curriculum content
Autumn 1 Website development – the principles of good website design, using web development software, HTML and CSS.
Autumn 2 Programming – extending knowledge and skills in programming techniques using Scratch.
Spring 1 Digital Dangers Movie – extending understanding of safe online behaviours combined with digital movie making.
Spring 2 Vector and Bitmap – developing skills in both types of graphic development and understanding their different uses.
Summer 1 Spreadsheet modelling – extending, understanding of the uses and features of spreadsheet software.
Summer 2 Networks – understanding different network topologies and their uses combined with presenting work using audio processing software.
