On Tuesday 14th May 2013 Sandbach School took  two strong athletics squads to compete in the first round of the ESAA Track and Field Cup. The athletics meet was held at Macclesfield Athletics facility and the day was set up to be a very good day for Sandbach after a great start to the season so far.

The weather on the day was poor and at the end of the first session on the track, before the field events, both teams were in the top three teams for their respective age groups – with the Intermediate team top of their group.

The Junior Boys team (Years 7 & 8) did exceptionally well on the day and out of the eight schools they won the competition. This result is undoubtedly down to their hard work, commitment and dedication in training so far this year. 

The Intermediate Boys (Years 9 & 10)  had an incredible first session on the track finishing first overall and ended up in third place overall after some awful weather put a dampener on their ambitions in the field events.

Overall on the day the boys did everything that could have possibly been asked of them, and they represented themselves and the school in the best possibly way. Hopefully both teams will continue onto the next round of the competition which will see them pitting their talent and hard work against the next level of opponent!

A brilliant day – bring on next year. The future is bright, the future is Sandbach!!

The next event is on Monday 20th May which is the District Selection event to be held at the Cumberland Arena in Crewe. The boys selected to trial for district can find out details from the M/ic Athletics Mr Sanders and on the school athletics notice board.

On Saturday 22nd June our own School Big Band will be playing host to two fantastic vocalists – Matthew Ford and Natalie McGrath. Not only that but musicians from the fantastic ‘A Band’ will also be appearing with our boys throughout the first half of the evening.

Throughout the first half of the concert, Matthew and Natalie will be accompanied by the Sandbach School Big Band.Following the interval where refreshments will be served on the lawns (weather permitting) the second half will feature the fantastic ‘A Band’ with a programme celebrating the great artists who have appeared in Las Vegas – Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Michael Buble, Dolly Parton, Celine Dion and Abba to name but a few will be performed by the all-star band including Russell Bennett(Trumpet), Andy Scott (Saxophone), Paul Kilvington (Keyboard) and Steve Buckley (Guitar).

Pimms can be purchased on the lawn from 6.30pm where ‘Out of the Blues’ will be entertaining the patrons prior to the show and
the audience will be asked to take their seats for a 7.30pm concert start. Black tie is optional for the evening in what is hoped will
be a night to remember. Following the concert, there will be a bar in the refectory until 11pm where again live music will be
performed by the group ‘Out of the Blues’.

Design & Technology Exhibition – 21st May, 4-7pm, Rigby Block.  

Once again Sandbach School competed in the Cheshire and Merseyside Schools Orienteering League, at six venues ranging from inner-city parks to the dunes at Formby, and finishing with the relays at Marbury Country Park.

Sandbach finished second overall in the league, narrowly beaten by a very strong team from Fallibroome in Macclesfield.  In the individual rankings we had some success, with medals won by Ewan Darlington (Silver, Year 8), Alex Robinson (Silver, Yr 9);  and Golds for Sam Pearson and Oliver Williams of Years 12 and 13.

The large trophy in the main picture is for our win in the Open Relay where Oliver Williams, Sam Pearson, and Tom Entwistle stormed to a convincing victory.

Sixth Form students undertaking the BTEC Sport Diploma course had the opportunity to visit one of football’s richest clubs on the 2nd May.

Mr Chambers organised a visit to Manchester City’s training ground at Carrington through a sports scientist at the club.
The boys gained a great insight into the day-to-day life of top premier league footballers. Students were given guided tours of the Carrington facility viewing everything from the hi-tech gym facility through to the thermotherapy and cryotherapy pools for athlete rehabilitation. Students learned of the meticulous planning that goes into keeping “£30 million pound assets” in top working order!

The students were encouraged to try out some rehabilitative equipment including the “zero gravity” treadmill designed to aid injured players who are unable to place weight on their legs.

The visit also ran alongside a successful 2 week, work experience that Year 13 student Kyle Donovan undertook at Manchester City’s Platt Lane facility (youth academy complex) where he helped train and prepare the club’s future players.

Overall the boys thoroughly enjoyed their experience and the trip was beneficial to their “athlete’s lifestyle” unit that they are currently working on.

Former Pupils Play for Cheshire.

Former student and member of the PE Dept Will Cargill (and Twickenham Assistant Coach) together with Twickenham Squad players Joe Gammage and Matthew Beesley all recently played for the full Cheshire Rugby Squad.

All three played for the Cheshire team v Yorkshire in the Bill Beaumont Competition on Saturday 4^th May at Bradford & Bingley RUFC losing narrowly 25-19.

Sandbach School triumphs in 2013′s first home athletics track competition.

On Tuesday 7th May Sandbach School hosted a home athletics fixture against the top competition of Manchester Grammar School (MGS) and The Grange School, Northwich. The fixture was held on the schools front track in front of the School House and was a track based fixture.

The competition was based upon the Year Groups 7 to 10 competing as individual teams as well as an overall competition that was decided by the outcomes of the year group competitions. Sandbach School was fantastically represented by its athletes and this was especially true at Year Ten where Harry Richardson, Jason Bennett, Jake Monks, Matthew Goyer and Daniel Owen competed fiercely against the strong MGS athletes.

The results from the year group competition were:

Year 7 – A win for Sandbach School

Year 8 – A win for MGS and a draw between Sandbach and the Grange for second.

Year 9 – A win for Sandbach School

Year 10 – A draw

Overall Result - Sandbach School overall winners.

As well as being a fantastic opportunity for many first time athletes to begin their athletic careers it was also great to see so many athletes out for another school athletics season. It was our third fixture of the season and represented our second victory following on from our third placing at the King’s School, Macclesfield Relay fixture. The season is looking bright, the future is looking Sandbach!

The next event is on the Tuesday 14th May in Macclesfield at the athletics track (behind the leisure centre) – this event is the first round of the English School Athletics Association Track and Field Cup 2013. This event will involve a mixture of athletes from Years seven to ten. If your son is involved he will be able to get details of the event from his team captains or the M/ic Athletics Mr Sanders.
