A Level Press Release 2018

As more A level subjects moved to the linear examination process, Sandbach School is celebrating the impressive achievements of students and the Departments who have taught them.  11% of our students achieved the very top grade of an A* with 27% achieving a grade A or an A*. The strong performance across the board has culminated in a pass rate 99%.

Headteacher Sarah Burns said that she was delighted with the results. “We’re thrilled to see so many of our students gain the grades and the university places they deserve. The strong partnerships between staff and students and hours of hard work have paid off, resulting in outstanding levels of achievement and success for our students.”

There have been many individual successes across the 2018 cohort. Ben Sinclair, a talented Chemist, has secured his place at Oxford University to study Chemistry after achieving 2A*’s and an A. Matt Davis achieved 3 A*’s and is heading to Lancaster to study Computer Science. Matt commented, “I am extremely happy with the results I have achieved. The help and the support I have received has been extraordinary. I would like to thank all who have helped me over the last 2 years. ”Aaron Dight, Deputy Head Boy, has achieved an A* and 3 A’s and is set to pursue his medical career. Aaron said, “I am really pleased with the results I have achieved and it is great to know that all the hard work in preparation for the exams is worth it in the end. Thank you to all the staff who have supported me along the way.” Aaron is taking a year out to broaden his medical experience by working and volunteering at Leighton Hospital before going off to university. Lewis Buttle has obtained an A* and 2A’s allowing him to study Computer Science at Warwick. Salih Gajoum has obtained an A* and 2A’s. This fantastic level of performance has allowed Salih to readjust his university pathway from Biomedical Science. Salih will be working as a heralthcare assistance for a year and will apply for Dentistry next year. Impressive Mathematical student Jakub Chorazy joined our 6th Form in YR12 from another Crewe School. He will be studying Maths at Manchester University after achieving an A*, 2A’s and a B.

Other notable performances have come from Ed Mountford who will be studying Economics at Sheffield having achieved 3 A’s. A member of the Head Boy Girl team, Alex Dobson, will be studying Law and Criminology at Sheffield University having achieved A*, A, B. Luther Bailey Wells will be going to Leeds to study Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies after achieving 2A’s and a B. Jacob Wood is going to study Ship Science, engineering, at Southampton with A level results of 2A’s and a B. Thomasz Porebski, who also joined Sandbach School Sixth Form from another Crewe School in YR13, achieved 2A’s and a B, allowing him to study Maths at Bristol University. Tamsin Stakes, achieved an A and a B grade. Along with her B grade in Dance achieved at Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College, she will be studying Contemporary Dance at Trinity Laban, London.

At the time of writing, 84% of students who applied for university have gained their first or second choice places with 29% going to one of the Russell group universities.

Several subjects have obtained outstanding levels of achievement, most notably Computer Science with 50% of students achieving A*/A grades, Maths where 47% of students gained A*/A and Chemistry with 43% of students achieving A*/A. In total 28 subjects achieved a 100% pass rate. Within this figure it is worth highlighting that both Business Studies and Physics achieved an A*-B pass rate of 47%. Art and Design also gained 100% at A*-C, Design and Technology 90%, Business Studies 88%, Computer Science 88%, English Literature 86% and Politics 85%.

A cohort of 10 students completed their BTEC Sport Level 3 with high levels of success. 100% of the students passed with all students achieving a Distinction grade. Notable performances came from Milo Bailey-Wells who was awarded a Distinction 3, the equivalent of A*, A, A at A level. The following students all achieved a Distinction 4, the equivalent of 3 A grades at A level: Jonathan Adderley, Oliver Jones, Thomas Pemberton, Kieran Stubbs and Tom Whittaker.
